I'm looking to purchase a new single breasted suit for my first job in an office.
Are black suits acceptable or are they more for formal occasions such as weddings and funerals?
Two-piece or three?
What sort of lapel should I be looking for?

Nope. huge difference. hence why fully bespoke suits take a lot longer to make and are far more expensive.
You should try owning one and you would see.
*waits for claim of a walk in wardrobe filled with bespoke suits from every savile row tailor, and off the peg suits from same tailor to prove his point*

There isn't a huge difference, there is a slight difference if we are talking about purchasing from the exact same shop with same materials and tailors

I would not go for M&S if price is a concern. They used to be really good but now the quality is so bad it won't last. For a cheap hardwearing suit I would recommend Burtons and then John Lewis. Then next step up would be places like suit supply/Hugo Boss etc

BTW there is a huge difference in terms of fit between having a suit adjusted and one bespoke. One is cut originally to fit you perfectly, the other is cut standard and adjusted and you can never get a suit adjusted enough to give it the feel and fit of a bespoke suit.

For example if I went into suit supply and asked for a navy blue suit wool 120s slim fit whatever. They get it out I try it on get it adjusted.
If I go to their bespoke section in the same store and say I want a navy blue suit 120s slim fit whatever, they would measure me up prettty much exactly the same way, but they would charge me 300 quid more, it would be the same material and fit just I can decide whether or not I want one of the buttons on my arsehole or not.

In reality there wouldn't be much difference if you went fully bespoke or bought off the hanger and got it adjusted, especially if we were talking about the same brand. This is in terms of quality and fit.
The idea of fully bespoke is really to make the suit unique to you.
